Election disinformation doesn't require technically sophisticated deepfakes. A clipped video, a selectively cropped photo, or an audio recording stripped of context can be as damaging as a fully synthetic piece of media. The common thread is attribution failure: voters can't determine where content came from or whether it's been altered.
C2PA addresses this at the source, before content enters the disinformation pipeline.
When every piece of official campaign content — photos, videos, press releases, social posts — carries a cryptographically signed provenance record, altered versions become immediately detectable. The C2PA manifest records the original content hash. Any downstream modification breaks the cryptographic signature and triggers a verification failure.
This doesn't require platform-level enforcement to be effective. Journalists, fact-checkers, and informed voters can verify content authenticity using the Content Credentials viewer before sharing or citing it.
Beyond campaigns, government agencies face the same problem for official communications. Deepfake press conferences, synthetic statements attributed to officials, and doctored documents are active threats to institutional credibility.
