In the first two weeks of the war with Iran, The New York Times identified more than 110 unique AI-generated images and videos circulating on X, TikTok, and Facebook. Fake missile strikes. Fake carrier attacks. AI-generated schoolchildren before a simulated airstrike. Seen millions of times before anyone could respond.
This is not a moderation problem as much as it is an integrity problem.
The deepfakes worked because most content published today carries no provenance data. Real footage and fabricated footage look identical to every platform, every viewer, and every algorithm. When everything is equally unverified, fakes spread freely.
The technical solution exists. Content provenance standards allow cameras, editing tools, and publishing workflows to embed cryptographic credentials into media at the moment of creation. That's why we call Limbo's core product 'Integrity'. When content travels, the credentials travel with it. Platforms and viewers can verify the origin, the chain of custody, and whether the file has been altered. A fake video of the USS Abraham Lincoln on fire has no such chain unless the AI platform that made it actually provides a manifest of the content's integrity.
This is what Limbo implements. When a journalist captures footage through a C2PA-enabled workflow, that content carries a verifiable record from capture to publication. It cannot be retroactively faked. We take that metadata and implement watermarks and fingerprints via our partners, all via one API and SDK.
The gap is not the technology, but adoption. And we make it a snap! Most legitimate news organizations still publish content with no provenance attached. That absence is what makes coordinated AI disinformation campaigns effective: the fakes fill a vacuum that verified content should occupy.
The Iran deepfake surge is a preview of what is to come. The tools that generated those 110 fakes will be faster, cheaper, and more convincing next month. The question for publishers and platforms is not whether to address content provenance, but really who becomes the leaders in the space before everyone else needs to catch up.
Limbo helps newsrooms and media organizations build verified content workflows. If you are thinking about provenance, we would love to talk. Keep an eye out of for our next piece on our work with major brands, as well!
